configuring VMware Update Manager

1) Set update manager to run as a service account with proxy access.
Using the services console, change the properties of the VMware Update Manager service so that it runs as the domain\username account.

2) Connect to virtual center.

3) Install Update manager plugin

From the menu select Plugins and then Manage Plugins

On the Available tab select the Download and Install button under Update Manager Extension
Accept the default settings for the installation
After the install completes, change to the installed tab and check the box to Enable the update manager client

4) Change to Update Manager view
Select the new Update Manager Icon in the toolbar to change your view.

5) Schedule update downloads

Change to the Configuration tab

Select Update Downloads from the settings box, and click on the Edit Update Downloads.. link Select only the option to download ESX Server Updates, the other two boxes should not be checked, and click Next
Schedule the updates to run weekly at a time of low activity on the Virtual Center server, I chose Sunday nights near midnight.
If desired, click and people to be notified when new updates are downloaded and click Next
Verify Options are correct on summary screen, and click Finish

6) Verify Internet access

Select Internet Access form the Settings box

Check the box to Use proxy, and enter the proxy settings in the available windows.
After entering the proper settings, click the Apply and then Test Connection buttons
If everything is working properly, you will see a popup window saying Connection is working properly.
If the test fails, verify the Account you used in step one is set up for internet access, and the server is able to reach the proxy you entered in the above settings.

7)  Download updates form VMware

Either wait for the scheduled task to run at the time you specified in step 5, or:

Select the Scheduled Tasks icon from the tool bar
Find the task named VMware Update Manager Update Download, right click the task and select Run
You will see the task in the recent tasks pane at the bottom of the infrastructure client. Once this task has completed, Update Manager is ready for use.
